How 1099 Taxes Work in Florida
As a freelancer, consultant, or gig worker in Florida, you are technically your own employer. This means you aren't subject to standard W-2 withholding from a "boss." Instead, you must manually track your earnings and determine federal and any applicable state obligations. Check the Florida Department of Revenue for state-specific rules.
Florida-Specific Considerations
Business Entity Tax
Florida has no corporate or franchise tax on sole proprietorships or single-member LLCs. Every Florida LLC must still file a $138.75 Annual Report with the Division of Corporations between January 1 and May 1; filing after May 1 adds a $400 late fee, and continued non-filing can lead to administrative dissolution.
Local Income Tax
None at the state level — Florida cities and counties cannot levy income tax. Many counties do require a Local Business Tax Receipt (formerly an occupational license) to legally operate, even for a one-person home-based business, which isn't an income tax but is easy to miss.
Filing & Estimated Payments
Individual returns use None — Florida has no individual income tax return. There are no state estimated income tax payments, since Florida has no individual income tax. The only recurring state deadline for an LLC is the Annual Report, due May 1.
Worth Knowing
No state income tax does not mean no state paperwork: most Florida contractors still owe a county-level Local Business Tax Receipt, a commonly missed step that is separate from anything income-tax related. Check your county tax collector.

Quarterly Estimated Payments
Federal estimated payments generally apply when you expect to owe at least $1,000, subject to withholding and safe-harbor rules. Typical federal due dates are below; weekends and holidays can shift them. January is in the following year. State requirements vary:
